Annual Mass for Life slated for January 19

PROVIDENCE – The Respect Life office of the Diocese of Providence is sponsoring the annual Mass for Life on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at St. Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Cranston.

All are invited to attend the 9 a.m. Mass. All clergy are invited to concelebrate, and all deacons are invited to diaconate.

The Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, D.D., Bishop of Providence, will be the main celebrant and homilist.

The Respect Life Office invites you to “join us as we continue to share God’s love with all men, women, and children, and ask God to fill us with the spirit of love that we may work effectively to establish among men Christ’s farewell gift of peace.” A coffee hour will follow the Mass.

La Salette Shrine announces activities

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, 947 Park St., will host a meeting of the Padre Pio Prayer Group, January 14, 7:15 p.m., in the Reconciliation Chapel of the church.

The Pax Christi group will meet on January 15, 7:15 p.m., in the chapel to pray, study and act for peace and justice.

The Shrine church also holds a Divine Mercy holy hour, Wednesday nights, following the 6:30 p.m. Mass. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed during the holy hour. For more information, call (508) 236-9056.

‘Fruits of a dream ‘ celebrate Dr. King

PAWTUCKET — The diocesan Office of Black Catholic Ministry and St. Leo the Great Church, 699 Central Ave., will hold a “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration,” January 13, 6 p.m., at the church. The celebration, entitled “The Fruits of a Dream,” will include prayer, music and a celebration of the Dr. King’s life. For more information, call 278-4552.

St. Antoine Villa holds open houses

NORTH SMITHFIELD — The Villa at St. Antoine, 400 Mendon Road, will hold its Winter Wonderland Open Houses, every Friday afternoon in January, 2 p.m. Tours of the 76 apartment assisted living facility will be offered, and refreshments will be served. Bishop to direct vocation retreat

Bishop to direct vocation retreat

PROVIDENCE — Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will direct a weekend retreat for men ages 18-35 who are discerning a call to the priesthood on February 8-9 at Our Lady of Providence Seminary. The retreat will begin on Friday at 7 p.m., and will conclude on Saturday at 7 p.m. Men who are interested should contact Father Michael Najim, diocesan Vocation Director, at 831-8011, or contact their parish priest.

St. John’s hosts free soup kitchen

PAWTUCKET — St. John the Baptist Church, 69 Quincy Ave., hosts a free soup kitchen every Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in the lower church.
