Father Peter M. Mongeon

PROVIDENCE — The Reverend Peter M. Mongeon, KCHS, 66, an incardinated priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, died Monday, July 31, 2023.
A native of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Father Mongeon exercised priestly ministry for many years in the Diocese of Providence. He was the son of the late Ralph Mongeon and the late Dorothy A. Dwyer and the late Marion Mongeon. He is survived by his brothers Michael Mongeon and Timothy Mongeon, and he has several nieces and nephews. A graduate of Our Lady of Providence Seminary High School (1975) and Providence College and the Seminary of Our Lady of Providence (1979) he received his M.Div. from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop Kenneth A. Angell, D.D., on December 10, 1983. He was assigned to parochial duties in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and served on their Diocesan Tribunal.
He was nominated to the Pontifical Academy of Diplomatic Studies for the Holy See by the late Archbishop Philip Hannon. He received a commission as an active duty Air Force chaplain with the rank of Captain. He returned to the Diocese of Providence and exercised priestly ministry in many parishes and churches, especially the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence.
He provided priestly ministry for Saint Mary’s Academy at Bayview for many years. A talented and gifted preacher, he gave many missions throughout the United States, including Alaska. His Papal Honors included Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulcher. From 2006 to 2012 he served as chaplain (Deputy Chief) to the Warwick Fire Department and chaplain (Major) to the Warwick Police Department.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was offered for the repose of Father’s soul on Saturday, August 5, in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence. Burial followed in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
