On Wednesday, June 15, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin welcomed members of the Virgen de la Altagracia committee to his office at the Chancery. During the gathering, individuals from the group explained to the bishop the activities that the committee carries out during the year. Some of the events the committee assists with include the June 26 Solemn Holy Mass in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, a visit by a bishop from the Dominican Republic, the hosting of different leadership and formation retreats and a monthly holy hour, among other activities. At the end of the visit, the members presented Bishop Tobin with the “Virgen de la Altagracia” plaque in gratitude for the support he has provided to the committee over the years. Devotion to the Virgen de la Altagracia originates from Catholics from the Dominican Republic, a country that has the largest number of Spanish-speaking immigrants in Rhode Island.
