LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Editorial makes bizarre connection between socialism and Greta Thunberg

TO THE EDITOR:

I have often thought that I wished all homilies were about the Gospel of the day or at least about one of the readings. With that in mind, I appreciated Father John A. Kiley’s “Quiet Corner” column in the September 25 edition of the R.I. Catholic. I got more from reading Father Kiley’s teaching about the story of Lazarus the beggar and the indifference of the rich man than I get out of many long homilies that do nothing to improve on the Teachings of Jesus.
Then, I was disappointed when I turned to the next page to read an editorial entitled, “Socialism and the New Green Dictatorship.” The editorial seems to me to be a bizarre connection between Socialism and the prophetic voice of the internationally acclaimed teen, Greta Thunberg, from Sweden who has mobilized millions of people in many countries to the streets and draw attention to the dangers of climate change. I don’t find her message too much different than that of Pope Francis.
