Parents Need to Exercise Vigilance

Posted

On March 28th Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the Parental Rights in Education Bill. This bill prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in schools for children from kindergarten to third grade. Opponents maligned the legislation as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Meanwhile, according to a Wall Street Journal poll, most Americans supported it. For now, parents in Florida can be more at ease with what is taught in the classroom for their younger children.
Yet, parents need to stay vigilant. In a recent virtual company meeting a Disney executive revealed the company’s decision to increase “LGBTQIA representation” by the end of 2022. Another employee of the company admitted to adding “queerness” to the animated show she directs. In Amoris Laetitia (#56) Pope Francis spoke against ideologies of gender that deny “the difference and reciprocity in nature of a man and a woman and envisage a society without sexual differences, thereby eliminating the anthropological basis of the family.” He expressed concern that these ideologies will “dictate how children should be raised.” Inspired by revelation and the truths of human biology the Church has consistently taught that gender ideologies do not lead to human flourishing. Parents must exercise vigilance regarding the movies and television shows their children watch on Disney.
