Bishop’s story of ‘Walter’ shows Catholic values require a humane and reasonable approach to immigration

TO THE EDITOR:

It was so encouraging to read Bishop Bruce’s column “A Prayer for Walter” [October 2]. Bishop Bruce clearly articulates the positive contributions immigrants make to our country and church and calls for reforms that would allow law abiding people to stay here while seeking citizenship.

The current administration has been hammering our immigrant population with the vilest language. Immigrants are constantly being portrayed as violent criminals, taking jobs from U.S. citizens and running up government costs as they seek social services and medical care. These are cruel and mostly false narratives but narratives that appeal to many voters. It is heartening to see a church leader of Bishop Bruce’s stature correct the record and remind us that Catholic values require a humane and reasonable approach to this complicated issue.

Please keep us updated on Walter and his family. My prayers are with him and all the immigrants who have come here seeking a better life.
